Why Bob Stoops is a Big Gain for the XFL

Just a few short days ago, the XFL announced Bob Stoops will be the head coach and general manager of the Dallas XFL team. This news came 20 months after Stoops retired as the “winningest” coach in Sooners history, boasting a 190-48 record, 10 Big 12 title wins, and a national championship. The XFL put out a nice tweet recapping his amazing career so far:

This is huge news for the XFL and hopefully serves to show the caliber of talent that the XFL is looking for. I’ve personally heard more than one XFL-naysayer respond positively to the news with thoughts that maybe it will be worth watching. And that, despite being a year out without much else announced, is the XFL’s main problem: there’s already a negative connotation associated with the league from it’s first run in 2001. But with the likes of Bob Stoops around, and maybe with a few more big names, the XFL could convince the general football audience at large that things truly are different this time.

Bringing in a coach from collegiate football is a smart move on many other accounts, as Commissioner Oliver Luck himself has a tie to college football. The XFL is promising us a faster, more exciting game; meaning that their version of the game could be set to mirror more of the collegiate style than the NFL. And who better than a man like Stoops to swoop in and push that style along? We’ll find out, Sooner, or later.
